Ditch the Commute, Sync Your Stack: How I’m Engineering My 3-Location Retirement Lifestyle

"Location, location, location."

It’s the holy grail of real estate. When I bought my apartment back in 2021, I followed the herd. I looked for the perfect "Walk Score"—maximizing proximity to the train station to slash my daily commute friction. For a traditional 9-to-5 corporate lifestyle, it was a solid, rational investment.

But here’s the kicker: I have an exact countdown running—21 months until my official retirement.

As I prepare for my "Encore Career" as a freelancer and consultant, the fundamental premise of my life is shifting. The old rule—“You must live near the station because you must commute to the office”—is officially dead.

Through a twist of fate, I currently find myself living a fluid, 3-location lifestyle (split between my urban condo, a corporate apartment, and my family’s rural home in Mie). And this chaotic, beautiful experiment taught me a profound lesson about the future of work and freedom: Real freedom isn't about physical location. It’s about unifying your invisible life stack.

Here is how I am engineering my ecosystem for the next chapter.

Stop Demanding "100 Points" From a Single Home

For decades, we’ve been victims of the "Sedentary Bias." We expect one single piece of real estate to score a perfect 100 on every metric—commute, shopping, space, and nature.

But in the age of decentralized technology, that’s a rookie mistake.

By deconstructing my residential functions across three locations, I’ve unlocked incredible mental bandwidth. My urban apartment has sub-optimal grocery shopping nearby? Who cares? I compensate for it when I'm at my other bases. When you stop demanding perfection from a single location, you eliminate lifestyle friction and drastically boost your overall life satisfaction.

Unifying the Tech Stack: High-Speed Web & Multi-AI

If physical proximity to a train station no longer dictates the value of your base, what does?

The answer is your invisible infrastructure. Across all three of my locations, my absolute non-negotiable is dedicated, blazing-fast internet. Relying on shared building Wi-Fi that congests during peak hours is a death sentence for modern cognitive productivity. As a heavy user who treats AI as a daily sparring partner for thinking, I need frictionless bandwidth.

Currently, I lean heavily on Gemini Pro, but as I hit the limits of single platforms, my next infrastructure investment is diversifying into a "Multi-AI Stack"—combining premium tiers of ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini to ensure my intellectual throughput never hits a bottleneck.

Unifying the Life Stack: The Automated Kitchen

But here is the secret weapon of my multilocation playbook, and it’s something most digital nomads overlook: The kitchen stack.

It’s one thing to have the same laptop and software at every desk. It’s a whole different game to ensure that no matter which house you wake up in, your physical metabolism remains uninterrupted.

For me, that means replicating my exact automated cooking infrastructure across all bases using advanced Japanese smart appliances like the Healsio superheated steam oven and Hoticook automated cooker.

Whether I am in the heart of Tokyo or the quiet countryside of Mie, I can drop in the same ingredients, press the same buttons, and get the exact same high-quality, nutrient-dense meal. This total predictability eliminates the daily decision fatigue of "what to eat," keeping my body energized and my mind sharp for deep work.

From Forced Commuting to Sovereign Movement

When society forces you into a crowded train car every morning, movement is a tax on your brain. It drains your working memory before your workday even begins.

But when you choose to move between your personal ecosystem of bases with clear intent, movement transforms from a miserable cost into a sovereign investment. In the city, I optimize my micro-mobility using electric bike-sharing services to beat traffic. In the rural countryside where sharing networks don't exist, I strategically bought my own e-bike to conquer the local terrain.

In 21 months, I will step into a life completely detached from the traditional commute.

I’m stop paying a premium for outdated real estate dogmas. Instead, I’m investing in raw bandwidth, a multi-AI stack, and automated nutrition. That is how you buy back your time and engineer true, scalable freedom.

What outdated rule of the old world are you still paying a premium for?
